AUGERS WELL FOR STIHL DRILLING TOOLS

STIHL South Africa, famous for its world-leading range of tools and equipment, is experiencing a surge in demand for its products, including its earth augers and drilling tools.

The STIHL BT121 one-man auger
STIHL South Africa GM David Hutton says the success of these products is based on their versatility and proven performance in a variety of applications. The two models, the new STIHL BT121 and the STIHL BT360, can be used for a variety of tasks including planting trees, landscaping, drilling holes for fencing, erecting poles and taking soil samples.

A perfect alternative to electric and battery powered drills is the STIHL BT45 drill. It is ideal for building or repairing docks and bulkheads, fences, outbuildings, retaining walls and other structures where electricity is not available. When fitting a planting auger, it can also be used for drilling holes in the ground to plant posts or trees. Holes up to 2,5cm in diameter can be drilled in wood. The powerful petrol engine has a two-speed gearbox with a reverse gear to release jammed drill bits. The anti-vibration system and non-slip handles make it safe and comfortable to use.

The one-man STIHL BT121 earth auger was designed for drilling holes up to 20 cm in diameter. It incorporates several features that ensure that it is both robust and simple to operate. Its powerful engine, which has an output of 1.3kW, turns the drilling tools at speeds making it conducive to easy control whilst drilling. The standard auger length is 695mm on the STIHL BT121, which can be augmented with a 450mm extension shaft. A chuck can also be fitted to the auger to facilitate drilling holes into wooden poles.

Elements for controlling the machine are integrated into one multifunction handle, making it easy to control with your thumb without letting go of the handle. It also features a newly developed handle frame that reduces the transmission of engine and auger vibrations to the handles ensuring that the operator can work for longer periods without tiring. It also incorporates the STIHL Easy Start System, which is made up of an ElastoStart and manual fuel-pump, and allows for safe and easy starting.

The STIHL BT121 is the only one of its kind in the world to incorporate the QuickStop drill brake. When the drill jams in the ground, the auger twists slightly causing the QuickStop lever to come into contact with the operator ’s thigh thus activating the brake and bringing the drill to an immediate standstill.

With a power output of 3kW, the two-man STIHL BT 360 is a more powerful machine capable of drilling holes up to 35cm in diameter in medium to heavy soils and taking soil samples. It has a standard length of 700mm and can be fitted with either a 500mm or 1 000mm extension.

The distance between the handle elements of the carrying frame and the machine makes it easier for the operators to hold the machine and position the drill precisely. The throttle trigger is advantageously located so that the machine can be controlled without moving the right hand. Furthermore, the carrying frame can be folded up quickly and easily enabling the auger to be transported in a normal-sized car boot.

Both STIHL machines include drilling gear capable of generating ideal transmission ratios with high torque for earth drilling work.

“The STIHL BT121 and STIHL BT360 machines are both characterised by their high engine power, robust design, handy size, easy operation, inherent safety and compactness, features that we believe will continue to assure their success in the market for drilling equipment,” concludes Hutton.
