Tuesday, 01 March 2005

Shortly after the completion of the first STIHL Non-Stop Dusi Canoe marathon, Dave Hutton, STIHL South Africa GM, said the company would definitely continue with the sponsorship.

“We are delighted with the way our first involvement with the race turned out and have committed ourselves to building this into the premier canoe event in the country,” said Hutton.

Hutton added that he was particularly pleased with the fit that the race has with STIHL’s brand image.

“Both the race and our brand express a certain quality of endurance and preparedness and the people involved in the race share a very similar ethic with our company – a spirit of cooperation and a heavy emphasis on well strategised team planning,” he said.

In the STIHL Non-Stop Dusi, competitors must complete in a single day what competitors in the regular Dusi Marathon take three days to accomplish.

“This is one of the toughest canoe races in the world, “ says race spokesperson Ray de Vries, “and I have no doubt that the enthusiasm of the STIHL team, the culture match between the company and the race fraternity and the quality of the race itself all add up to a very bright future for the event.”

This year’s race produced no surprises and was won by multiple winner and one of South Africa’s great canoeists, Martin Dreyer and his 19 year old partner Craig Turton.

“We’re pleased with our victory here. This is no ordinary race and just finishing it is really tough. To win is a special bonus,” said Dreyer.

Dreyer complimented STIHL for the manner in which they threw themselves into this sponsorship.

“The enthusiasm of the STIHL team pervaded the whole event and I have no doubt that this will grow into a premier sporting event in this country.”
